New Restaurant Opening Next Door

We are still in mourning over the loss of the VegiTerranean Restaurant next to our studio/gallery. Our friend, chef Scot Jones, has gone on to better things. It didn't take long for a new restaurant to snatch up the prime location and create a new and exciting concept. Cleveland chef Dante Boccuzzi has partnered with local developer Joel Testa and others to open a restaurant in the former VegiTerranean location in Akron’s Northside Lofts. DBA, which stands for Dante Boccuzzi Akron, is to open by March. Work on a new interior already is underway. Although we will miss all the holiday gatherings at the old restaurant, we look forward, with eager anticipation, to this spring's opening. See you there!

Myoshu Wren and the students from Snowflake Tea Room did a beautiful job presenting a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony, Sunday October 16th. We served over thirty people and raised money for the potteries damaged in the March earthquake in Mashiko Japan.

New Friday Night Tile Workshops begin in September!

We're beginning our Fall Fridays Tile Workshops in September plus two more in October. These will be small, two hour classes that will allow anyone to have fun while exploring their creative side. We'll walk you through every step using different carving and texturing techniques using stamps and molds and at the end of class you'll have created a unique tile that will be ready to pick up in about two weeks. We'll even have it glazed for you!

The Ann Arbor Art Fairs are upon us. Every year this massive and at times overwhelming art experience takes over the city of Ann Arbor and the lives of hundreds of artists. The South University Art Fair is where our booth is located and is one of the more pleasant areas in all of Ann Arbor during the fair. Held over two weekends at the end of June and beginning of July, the Boston Mills Artfest is a celebration of fine arts, fine crafts, and the creative minds behind them. 160 artists are invited to each show and the grounds at Boston Mills are turned into an outdoor gallery of sorts, with food and entertainment to add to the enjoyment. The monthly Akron Artwalk in the Northside Arts District takes on a new intensity on December 4th as galleries, shops and studios put their best feet forward for the holiday shopping crowd. Our annual holiday open opens begins at 10am and continues through Artwalk until 10pm. The Akron Glassworks will be giving glassblowing demonstrations, too. Shop to the accompaniment of the Street Beat Drummers and take advantage of the free parking at Northside (by Luigi's) and in the Market/High Street Deck for those visiting the spaces at Summit Artspace Studios and the galleries and shops in the Historic District. New Items for Spring/Summer - Take a Look!

We've been busy in our own studio and gallery this spring trying out new colors, designs, and shapes. This is just a sample of some of newer and popular pieces we've been making for our customers. From mugs and coasters to vases and pear sculptures we've had a great response to the new designs. We're about ready to take them on the road as our summer shows are fast approaching but we thought we would give you a sneak peek!

Great prices on items such as cups (approximately 5"T) and coasters. Our three-legged mug has become a signature piece here in our gallery. The 4" square coasters come as a set of four, wrapped with black cord and boxed.

Our pear sculptures are one of our most popular items. These come in a couple of different sizes and groupings.

The small 8" square plates and our 8" triangular tapas plates are fun for summer parties. We often sell them as candle holders when displayed with a pillar candle.

Introduced earlier in the year, the new "Red" design is fast becoming one of our best sellers. All items are available in any of our signature color patterns.

Our Tri-tray shown here (below) in a new color we're calling Bordeaux is also available in other patterns. This tray can either be displayed an an easel or sits nicely on its' three legs. We've made some to use in our gallery, during our monthly Artwalks, as serving trays for cheese and crackers.

We've also re-designed our stemware (below) for a more festive look and changed the design of the glass bowl. We still offer three styles; white wine (all-purpose), red wine, and martini. We also offer a limited edition champagne flute. These are so much fun for yourself or guests and they make wonderful wedding gifts! White wine glasses 11"T and martini glasses 8"T.

We're always making a variety of small, decorative vases and lidded jars. These are beautiful accessory pieces that add a nice, handmade touch to any room. The pieces below are shown in the Bordeaux design. Size of vases and jars vary. Approximately 9"-12"T

Some larger pieces we offer, like these slab-built, Japanese influenced "Hamada" bottles are exceptional pieces that look even more dramatic when displayed with some curly willow or bamboo.

These bottles are also available in any of our signature patterns.

Slab is gently curved ... not flat.

Our narrow mirror is very popular not only because it has great colors and is finely crafted but because of its size. Since it is only 24"W and 34"T, it can be place just about anywhere. We can also custom design mirrors to fit any space.

She has a unique blend of sounds that are simply mesmerizing plus she's right here from Akron. Check out the new Akron sound.

The other highlight in May is the new Canton Museum National Art Show. This show features 80 fine artists and craftspeople from around the country. The show is May 22-23. Parking is free and there is on on-site cafe. Find something beautiful for your home and enjoy the gallery atmosphere of the Canton Museum. Our booth location is 9 and 10.

A Final Word About the Empty Bowl Project

For nearly 30 years we've been professional potters and designers, and Akron's Northside District has been home to our studio for much of that time. The Akron community has always supported and encouraged our work and we are fortunate to be part of such an art-friendly environment. A remarkable collective effort has been created by all the people involved for this years event. It is our hope that the Empty Bowl Project becomes a powerful tool for bringing about positive change locally. We thank those supporters and all the people who made this project possible.

Tile Commission Installed

We just finished installing our recently commissioned wall tile composition in the newly remodeled lobby of the Akron General Medical Center. The 5-panel piece is made up of masonite and wood frames that have been textured with modeling paste and then painted with several layers of colors for the background. The ceramic tiles are then "floated" on the individual panels to create a three-dimensional composition. The individual ceramic tiles have airbrushed under-glazes for the surface design and it is then finished with a gloss glaze.

February Artwalk Highlights

Even though we had an incredible amount of snow Friday before Artwalk, we dug out just in time to welcome art lovers to our gallery. So many people had cabin-fever that they came out looking for some fun stuff to see ... and we didn't disappoint. It was perfect weather for clay sculptor Ron White to do a fantastic ice sculpture in the alley of the studio. Thanks to the art trolley driver for dropping the people off in front of our studio where they could easily watch Ron carve away. It was like a winter carnival. And thanks to all who ventured out. By the looks of the crowds at Luigis and VegiTerranean restaurants the snow didn't keep many people away. Mark your calendar for the next Artwalk on March 6th from 5-9pm.

Moving from restaurants and galleries to wine bars and shops, the Artwalk features pottery, hand-blown glass and eclectic art in Downtown Akron's historic district and at Northside. Parking near Luigis is free as is the trolley service. Catch the trolley at any stop along the route and ride between studios. Hop on and off and visit all the studios. A walking map is provided with a list of participating studios. Come out and see the creative side of Akron.

Akron Glassworks resumes there live glassblowing demonstrations from 5-10pm. The Northside District also houses the Red Light Galleries that will host a make-and-take art during the artwalk. Akron's art district extends to High Street with purveyors of the best Akronite Attire, Rubber City Clothing and the We Gallery which include a fine art exhibition by artist J.W. Cooper as well as an interactive community art installation project with artist Emily Vigil. The We Gallery's exhibition space blends into Uncorked Wine Bar, and adventuresome and curious artwalkers can wind their way through a stairwell or two and find themselves at Mocha Maiden, Musica and NOTO - an edgy, chic fashion boutique. With so mich to see and do, it is no surprise that the monthly artwalk is becoming one of the coolest nights out in Akron.

Tamara Mitchell, one of the talented, creative, and supportive chefs from Dine-In-Diva has begun testing soups for our Empty Bowl Project, March 21st at the Akron Art Museum. These look so good. She's tested two vegetable based recipes - Corn and Butternut Squash Chowder and Broccoli, Red Pepper, and Cheddar Chowder (using Adams Reserve Cheddar). Both look so good. I'm going to Trader Joe's on Saturday morning and picking up some really good cheddar ... just might have to try the Broccoli, Pepper, Cheddar Chowder. Bowls are stacking up

Bowl by bowl we're starting to gain on the number of bowls we need for the Empty Bowl Project. Usually it's not until later in the day, after the studio quiets down, that we can sit at the potter's wheel and begin to throw. There is a meditative quality about just being focused on the clay and the hum of the wheel that melts away all of the other daily distractions that happen in the studio.

Potter Alan Caiger-Smith said "Shapes which are repeated begin to mature without undergoing any obvious changes. The form evolves by itself, and ... you find the shape has become more agreeable simply by being made often." What you start out with goes through a natural process of subtle change and the more you make the more the bowls begin to reveal themselves as truly individual shapes never exactly what's in your mind's eye and no two ever the same.

We're starting to make the bowls for our upcoming fundraiser at the Akron Art Museum on March 21st. Reservations are now open for the Empty Bowl Project. All money collected will be donated to Akron's Good Samaritan Hunger Center to fight hunger.

The making and decorating of over 200 bowls is the fun part with a dozen or more bowls made at a time. The hand-thrown bowls hold eight to twelve ounces and no two are exactly alike. We've designed a new bowl this year for people to add to their collection.

We've definitely improved over last year with additional and different chefs being added to the mix. Adding a few new restaurants this year helps to keep the event fresh and interesting as different soups are added. Attendees will get to sample THREE soups instead of two. Also new this year is the addition of live music. Check out the participating restaurants below. Took a break this morning and headed up to The Sculpture Center in Cleveland to see the work of Japanese ceramist Yasuhisa Kohyama. The show is in its final days at the center and it was now or never to see this incredible work. "The work of Kohyama, 73 years old, is an expressive and bold bridge between the ancient techniques of Sueki and anagama firing and contemporary Japanese abstract ceramics." The surface is unglazed but the the variety of surface textures, colors, and sheens are beautiful, giving each piece an amazing amount of depth. Even though the pieces are thick-walled, there is no sense of them being awkward or cumbersome. In fact, they almost seem to float off the display pedestals. There is a certain richness to the surface that can only be produced by this type wood firing. Kohyama has achieved the perfect balance between form and surface.

Our local newspaper ran a story today, appropriate for this time of year, about the unique businesses in our downtown area. They ranged from a peanut shop to a religious artifacts store with some really cool galleries in between. But the thing I noticed immediately was the absence of any mention of the shops/galleries/studios located in the Northside District that obviously includes us plus the Glassworks plus the Red Light studios.

At first I felt slighted but then, as with what usually happens with a story like this, it gave me pause for thought. I started thinking about why we settled where we did and, in fact, it was probably that very reason we were overlooked by the writer of the story. The fact is, this is a very special area and people do have to seek us out in order find us and that's what makes coming into our studio/gallery a great find. I mean, we've been here 18 years and somehow people have managed to find us amid all the other commercial clutter. I like the people that still have a sense of adventure and inquisitiveness about things and the intuitiveness to keep looking for that special find because it makes them feel unique. We're not on Main street or in a strip mall, we're tucked away where, well, not everyone can find us.

I remember being in San Francisco and while walking, unknownly taking a wrong turn down a dimly lit alley and coming upon a small basement restaurant in Chinatown. To this day, the meal and experience of discovery that I enjoyed that night is in the top three of my life ... and that was 30 years ago! That's how I want people to feel when they walk down our "nicely lit" alley and experience the gallery that awaits them behind those old brick walls.

Most of the people in our building and neighborhood are some of the hardest working people I know and refuse to give up or give in to modernity. A few artists will come and go but most are here for the long haul. Yeah, I might feel a little overlooked sometimes but for the most part I'm glad to be under the radar a bit and off the beaten path. Because, when a person walks through our door and looks at our work and enjoys the experience, I know they'll keep coming back.

We were able to catch an inspiring and finely crafted exhibit Friday evening at the Cleveland Institute of Art. The exhibit showcases the work of 17 Swedish women who design furniture, textiles and other functional and decorative objects. It's an inspiring show that really exemplifies Swedish design as it relates to form and function and just as important raises the profile of women in design. It's looking like Santa's workshop in the studio and the "elves" are working hard. Every year we try to come up with a new design for our Christmas ornaments and every year it amazes me the time it takes to develop a new design. Once all the preliminary drawing and creative ideas are worked through we must then work out how to re-create the design on the ornament. Sometimes it's this technical aspect that creates the biggest challenge. Because of the process we've developed, each ornament is fired four times! That's an amazing amount of time for such a small piece but we think it's worth it since the results are truly unique. This batch of Christmas ornaments will be finished and out of the kiln on Saturday just in time for Artwalk. Stop by and see these special heirloom ornaments. They're sure to become a part of your family's holiday tradition for generations to come.

Building Getting a New Look

Jury Results Are In for ACC!

The ACC Show Baltimore has more than 700 of the country's leading craft artists presenting their latest designer, handmade work. This is the largest juried, indoor craft show in the nation. Crafting a Lifestyle

Recently, our local PBS station ran the series Craft in America. It's a wonderfully diverse program with all of the artists reflecting on what draws them to a life of creativity. It got me thinking about a copy of a letter that I had gotten from John Leach many years ago at a functional ceramics workshop and in that letter Bernard Leach wrote to his grandson, John, encouraging him to come to work at his pottery studio in St. Ives, Cornwall. In it he describes what it really takes to be a potter. This letter has stuck with me for over 25 years and continues to ring true today.

"This is the day of the artist craftsman not of the journeyman potter. That means that any young person taking up a craft today as a vocation only justifies himself or herself by finding something to voice or say. That is his life , or true character, extends into his pots. Formerly this was not the case but today it is. We want from the potter the same sort of quality which we expect from a good author, poet, painter or composer. The journeyman potter's place has been taken by the factory. Thus your main objective should be aesthetic - to know good pot from bad pot and to be able to find your way with your own clear convictions amidst all the good and bad pots of past and present to making good sincere and honest pots of your own."

Empty Bowl Project Date Announced

The date for the Empty Bowl Project has been set and we're planning some additions to the menu with some new restaurants added this coming year. The event will be held on March 21,2010 in the lobby of the Akron Art Museum. More details will be coming in December with Early Bird Registration available January 1, 2010.

The premise of the Empty Bowl Project is simple: Guests are served soup in a handmade ceramic bowl in exchange for a cash donation to fight hunger. Keep the bowl as a reminder of the meal's purpose. Every time you take the bowl from your cupboard, you will be reminded that someone's bowl is always empty, and that on this one occasion you helped to alleviate hunger. You could choose to do so again at anytime.

All money collected will be donated to Good Samaritan Hunger Center to fight hunger, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and to help bring about an attitude that will not let hunger exist. A remarkable collective effort is put forward by all the people involved. It is our hope that the Empty Bowl Project becomes a powerful tool for bringing about positive change locally.

October Artwalk

The weather cooperated for Artwalk last night and we got to meet many new people who came out to see the creative side of Akron. The Artwalk is a unique event different every month, and the Art Trolley kept shuttling people to the various studios and shops. With over 15 locations to visit plus with restaurants like Crave, Luigis and VegiTerranean in the neighborhood and even live music at Northside, art lovers always have a full evening of fun. Tell your friends and mark your calendar for the next Artwalk, November 7th.

Fun Time Had by All at Annual Girls' Nite!

The gallery was full for a solid 4 hours last night at Girls' Nite Out. Tamara Mitchell from Dine-In Diva created some wonderful and tasty treats for our fall event from goat cheese dips and chutneys and various cheeses (cut out in the shape of oak leaves!) to pumpkin muffins and other sweet treats. Megan Dyer from Akron Life and Leisure Magazine brought her group over after having cocktails at VegiTerranean Restaurant next door. It seems so many people were making the evening a fun night out. Thanks to all of our customers who continue to support us and visit our gallery and studio. Please keep us in in mind for gifts this holiday season. We have many unique and affordable items this year that make gift-giving easy and fun and that will be appreciated for many years. OK, now it's on to Artwalk tonight. Looks like the weather is going to cooperate which will make getting around to the different studios easy and comfortable. See you tonight!

With all the craziness of getting ready for Girl's Nite tonight, we almost forgot about reminding many of you about the neighborhood Artwalk tomorrow nite from 5-10pm. There's usually different activities going on around the neighborhood such as the glassblowing demonstrations across the street at Akron Glassworks and an art opening at Millworks. Don't worry about getting around since the city has provided maps and an "Art Trolley" to take you from place to place.

They have a selection of our home accessories and shopping in their gallery is really a delightful experience. When you enter the shop your senses are immediately awakened by the sensual colors and heavenly fragrances of their huge candle selection. You'll find our work in the middle gallery, just past the "room of candles". We've also begun to sell, in our gallery, a selection of taper and pillar candles that complement our work. It seems as if the preparation for the Girls' Nite Out has been going on for weeks and it's finally coming down to the home-stretch as all the pieces (literally) are coming together. With all the new handmade beads to choose from, designing the earrings and necklaces is probably the most fun since not only are the combinations endless but you simply get lost in the moment as the new pieces come together and each in its' own way is like creating a little sculpture. Time passes much too quickly. Careful ... can't have too much fun ... we've only have 5 more days til Girls' Nite!
